Thanks for the correction Vladimir.

I've double checked that paragraph for typos but didn't find anything, perhaps having written it my expectations are hiding them. Care to say more?

A little under 3,000, which is the world death toll from all causes every 12 hours.

The world death toll from all causes every 12 hours is about 75,000 people. This makes 3000 the standard death toll for 30 minutes.

The paragraph starting "Forty-five days" has a few typos.

I tend to write a lot about essentially the same topic, and my hope was that it would be implied. If that's not the case, there's now a little note under the video. Thanks for bringing this up.

I do not understand this post. Something about this song? Solid State Society... I assume it's referencing GitS.

:)

The Ph.D. would certainly be helpful for sparking interest, but from the position of not being very close to one it might be easier to convince existing Ph.D.s to get more involved with FAI, indirectly through donating and directly through writing convincing FAI papers, etc. Contributing to FAI theory is greatly helped by study, but of course that doesn't require an actual degree.

"Most seem to halt plans for degrees past a Bachelors when they get involved, as one can learn on their own and the extra prestige gained (compared to working) often isn’t worth the time and lost income."

That is also my view, although I'm wondering if it would be easier for me to spark a bit of interest in FAI related issues in academia if I got a PhD and work in some local lab or get a position at the university.

ATM I'm just working toward getting the BSc and holding a job that gives me lots of free time so I can focus my tiny efforts on the FAI theory (it also seems to me this is the way that gets along fairly well with my personality - a thing that shouldn't be neglected, IMO).

"Though I hear they aren’t really putting much into that [the off world colony]. "

Yeah, it's just one of the ideas being tossed around. If we had practically unlimited resources for x-risk reduction it might be a worthwhile project, but as things stand today, not really.

"Considering how familiar you are with these things, was your point to suggest that I should also mention things people can do to actually help?"

Well, I was just thinking about what you are doing to battle x-risks and if you might have any concrete proposals... As you can imagine, there are some of us who are considering devoting our lives to the cause and aren't really sure what is the best way to help. So, I was more or less just looking for some ideas to help me guide my path. :)
