The Ph.D. would certainly be helpful for sparking interest, but from the position of not being very close to one it might be easier to convince existing Ph.D.s to get more involved with FAI, indirectly through donating and directly through writing convincing FAI papers, etc. Contributing to FAI theory is greatly helped by study, but of course that doesn’t require an actual degree.

That is also my view, although I’m wondering if it would be easier for me to spark a bit of interest in FAI related issues in academia if I got a PhD and work in some local lab or get a position at the university.

ATM I’m just working toward getting the BSc and holding a job that gives me lots of free time so I can focus my tiny efforts on the FAI theory (it also seems to me this is the way that gets along fairly well with my personality – a thing that shouldn’t be neglected, IMO).

Yeah, it’s just one of the ideas being tossed around. If we had practically unlimited resources for x-risk reduction it might be a worthwhile project, but as things stand today, not really.

Well, I was just thinking about what you are doing to battle x-risks and if you might have any concrete proposals… As you can imagine, there are some of us who are considering devoting our lives to the cause and aren’t really sure what is the best way to help. So, I was more or less just looking for some ideas to help me guide my path.
